About the L.O.V.E. Thy Neighbor Lunch Program
In 2008, the L.O.V.E. Thy Neighbor lunch program was begun as a "Local Outreach Volunteer Effort" of the First United Methodist Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan to address an unmet need for weekend meals among hungry people in our community, some of whom are literally at our church's doorstep every day.
For the convenience of our guests, we distribute food on Saturday mornings in partnership with the St. Andrew’s Breakfast Program – an outreach which people have been able to count on for free and nutritious hot daily breakfast for over 3 decades. Folks are able to eat breakfast and receive food items for later, all in one stop. Typically, we distribute food to 80 – 100 individuals each week, and many take items back to family members who cannot attend the breakfast.
Guests at the St. Andrew’s Breakfast Program are of all ages. Some are homeless; some have housing but, without food assistance, could have to choose between paying bills and having enough to eat. Some are struggling with addiction, mental illness, or chronic health conditions. All are dealing with difficult circumstances.
The L.O.V.E. Program is a member of the Food Gatherers Partner Program Network. This allows us to utilize the free food donation pantry weekly and purchase food, at reduced prices, from their warehouse. Additional food needed for our distribution is donated by individuals or purchased at bulk food warehouses at discounted prices. We always especially welcome donations of peanut butter and pop-top, ready-to-eat canned foods. Because many of our guests are homeless, we request donations of cans that have pull top lids and do not require a can opener.
